The system of hystoric villas of the Varese area. Case study: Villa Panza
PROFESSOR: I. Vagge
STUDENTS: J. Bartaletti, M. Galletti
The territory near the province of Varese is rich of history, culture and natural attractivenesses. However, it has great difficulties concerning a peaceful cohesion of all these spheres. The goal is creating a bond between all the contents realizing a network able to create a diversified and efficient touristic market. A suitable example lies on the system dealing with the historic palaces in province of Varese.
The system is organized taking into consideration three areas of interest: “Ville”, “Architecture and landscape”, and “Contemporary Art”. It deals with a geographical network having as points of reference two main poles connected with the main points of interest nearby.
Villa Panza combines all these set of problems. For this reason I thought it could have been the perfect model for my study. Starting from this example I could elaborate a redevelopment strategy system for the other palaces on the territory.

BACHELOR'S DEGREE
Replanning the urban areas of San Lorenzo district in Rome
PROFESSOR: F. di Carlo
STUDENT: M. Galletti
The aim of the project is the improvement of San Lorenzo district enhancing its historical green area and proposing a new neighborhood look tied to its history and culture. San Lorenzo was born as working-class neighborhood hosting railroaders, workers and artisans. After suffered the bombing during World War II by the Allies aircraft, it was redeveloped and finally destined as a student quarter: it hosts the headquarters of the University “La Sapienza”, students campus and lodgings, many clubs and bars. Nowadays it is an important landmark of Roman nightlife: this aspect has brought important economic benefits but it has also caused a sort of loss of identity, with inevitable negative consequences for its inhabitants.
The project aims to the renovation of the neighborhood creating a network of recreational centres, such as gardens or squares, allocated all over the area. In order to revoke its historical feature I considered appropriate committing each “pole” to a different art or craft encouraging the development of new small activities.
The area under consideration is located in the current quarter known as “borgo dei marmisti” (marble workers quarter), right next to the Monumental Cemetery of Campo Verano.
It is not in accordance with the legal standards and composed mostly by some crooked shacks, therefore it is quite inaccessible.
The project aims to the demolition and the reconstruction of the entire quarter within a green area, and the realization of a park dedicated to contemporary arts.
